Metra - one of the largest metropolitan transit systems in the Midwest - spent $6.6 million with a UV company to purify the air on nearly 700 railcars.
High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are able to trap tiny particles down to a size of about 0.3 microns. However, many experts agree that COVID-19 particles can be as small as 0.06 microns. This means that HEPA filters are simply not efficient enough in the fight against this deadly disease.
In addition, HEPA filters cost hundreds of dollars and must be replaced. Upon replacement, there is a high risk of cross contamination due to the live particulates trapped inside.
Mu - also known to scientists as B.1.621 - was added to the WHO's list of "variants of interest" on August 30, 2021. First identified in Colombia in January 2021, Mu is now behind Colombia's deadliest pandemic wave yet. The Mu variant has been detected in some 40 countries so far, including the US, UK, Hong Kong and Europe, and could spread further.
In May 2021, scientists identified yet another coronavirus variant, C.1.2, in South Africa. C.1.2 is more mutations away from the original Alpha virus than any other Variant of Concern (VOC) or Variant of Interest (VOI) detected worldwide.
